Jean Watts is a teacher of children, which explains the focus of many of these cartoons. They express the sometimes joy but more often frustration of teaching. Others represent the trials of a woman who tries to balance a job, young children, a husband and a home. The expressive style of the figures is minimalist; there is rarely a wasted stroke of ink, so the humor is largely textual rather than visual in nature. My favorite cartoon is one of the few that is a sight gag. It is a scene of a laundry room where there are four baskets of clothes. They are labeled, "lights, darks, delicates and use in garden under corn." So true that is. As a college teacher with many working mothers in my classes, another of my favorites is a two-sided report card. On one side, there is the list of grades Math B+ Spelling B English A- History B+ Music A- Phys Ed B+ On the other side there is the list of grades How to clean toilets D+ Make cookies C+ Change car oil D Put tile down (none) Doing charities C Quiet cranky baby D Not undermine spouse F Organize closets D Develop a calling D- I am sure that most women who simultaneously worked and went to school recognize themselves in this list. A representation of the life of women who work and try to keep a sane home existence in the midst of strong trends towards domestic chaos, these cartoons are humorous comments about the complex realities of life.
