Book Overview

Life interpreted, written, and emulated in the style of the Tao, spiced with experiences of NYC.

This is Ping's first collection of poetry, in which she explores themes of culture, gender, sexuality, and identity. The collection adopts a very personal tone to explore internal struggles--the devils and angels--and highlights moments of ecstasy throughout.

My favorite book of poetry

I first picked up Of Flesh and Spirit at a used bookstore in South Dakota when I was 15 years old. I read it, and liked much of it, but didn't really get it. Then, last summer (at age 19), I got it off the shelf to read, and an entirely new world unfolded. My favorite quote, which I remind myself of all the time, is from "Splintered Eye" on page46. Real pain is unspeakable. If it can be described or talked about, it's no longer real.

A reading in Minneapolis

I have returned from a reading by Wang Ping (along with George Kalamaras) and I was highly impressed by her work. As a woman, I find that I can identify with her words of womanhood and restriction. I look forward to delving into her world of prose, although she gives a taste of it in this collection by means of prose-poems.
