Although Of Face Value was written as fiction, it is based on the real life events of Carol Harper, whose beautiful face was destroyed by a drunk driver. Carol's story about a woman named Lisa Caulder is an inspiration to others.Lisa had a high-profile position in a prestigious Washington, D.C., hotel. Lisa marries the man of her dreams a year before the life-changing collision. When her husband, Brian, learns about the wreck, he is devastated. She is unrecognizable and no longer has the face of the woman he married. After numerous surgeries to rebuild her face, Lisa embarks on a journey to reclaim her old life. Through talking with God, she begins to mourn the old Lisa and follow the path God has opened to find the new Lisa.Through ups and downs, heartbreak and setbacks, Lisa becomes stronger. The reader goes along on her journey to discover that true beauty is on the inside.
"And while He was praying, the appearance of His face became different, and His clothing became white and gleaming." -- Luke 9:29 Is beauty only skin deep? It's hard to tell until you look beneath the skin to reveal the true person within. "Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised." -- Proverbs 31:30 Of Face Value is a fictional account of the real-life experiences of Carol Harper (before and after photos are on the front and back covers to make the point clearer). As a result, the book has the kind of detail that makes it ring truer than most fiction. For that reason, I chose to think of the book as a non-fiction book that is cleaned up to considerately spare the feelings of some of the people who were in the author's life. At a young age, the fictional Lisa Caulder was on a fast track to the top in the hospitality industry when a collision crushed the bones of her often-admired face and left her struggling at first simply to live. Many trials awaited her including the view of herself in the mirror, countless operations, much physical pain, and huge strains on her new marriage. As her body healed, she realized that her perspective needed to shift as well. While she once chose companions by their attractiveness, she began to seek inner beauty instead. Ms. Harper is now a motivational speaker who encourages others by telling her story. I can easily imagine that people whose lives have been disrupted and redirected by unexpected events find her comments to be encouraging and refreshing. The story has another message that you won't miss: Drunk drivers are a menace to health and safety that our society does too little to discourage. In this fictional account, the clearly guilty party receives a fine of $450 for all but killing someone. This fictional driver was continually driving drunk and getting caught for it. Yet he only received slaps on the wrist. This guy should have been behind bars for a long time, if only as a way to help dry him out. Then he should have been set to working to pay for the cost of her medical care. Why is society so tolerant of such dangerous behavior? I fear it's because a high percentage of people drive drunk some of the time. That has to stop! If you know anyone who has ever driven drunk, you should be sure this book is read by him or her (even if you have to read it aloud to her or him). Not even a habitual drunk would want to do to someone what this fictional drive did to the fictional victim. The book has a third message: The meaning of your experience is what you make of it. There's a wonderful section near the end of the book where Lisa is challenged to see that many good things came out of her experiences. The rest of the spiritual rebuilding will encourage you, even if you don't have any major issues in your life right now. You'll have a better sense that when "bad" things happen, sometimes the result is a good one. "And we know that all things wor
