My truest evaluation of works of either literary or cinematic art comes not during the reading or viewing, but afterward-- often days or weeks afterward: Do the characters resonate? Do the images stick with me? This debut novel succeeds on these levels and more. The main characters, here, are well conceived, and I found it easy to either sympathize with or revile them, whichever was appropriate. The author does well supplying insight into each character's motivations, and this strengthens the reader's judgment of his subjects. Cinematic images are created and solidly established by the detailed treatment the author gives each element of scene, setting and character. The descriptions lend deep credibility to the work; supporting, while not impeding the progress of the story. The novel is a quick read, but it lingers insidiously...like many of the best.
A stunning debut novel

Of Blood and Blackwater is a really great read. It's the author's first novel and he hit the mark - dead on!! Take a leap of faith with a new author and emerge yourself in a gutsy, well written tale of nightmares, murder, mystery and the power of love and devotion. The characters are well defined and develop believably as the story of Gareth McKenna unfolds. You won't regret the time you spend with McKenna, his friends, the authorities trying to stop a serial murderer, the man who is making McKenna's life unravel before him. I did not want to put the book down. Read this one!! Like me I'm sure you'll be waiting for Mr. Heffernan's next novel. Joyce Remington Eugene, OR
