Hugh Nibley. Say the name. What do you think of? Intellect? Scholarship? Ancient religions? Temple worship? The study of civilizations? Surely, but there's more. Brother Nibley has a keen sense of... This description may be from another edition of this product.
Along with George Durrant, John Bytheway, and Truman Madsen, Dr. Nibley is one of those distinctive non-(General) Authority authorities on the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This book is small "quote book" taken from his titanic corpus of Christianity and history. Therefore, it is a good introduction to Dr. Nibley.A quick look at the index shows the breadth of his subject: Joseph Smith, temple, Zion, anti-Mormon "tradition," education, and so forth. Reading the book shows you the depth and height of his understanding. The only critique I would give is that a third edition be published once the Collected Works of Hugh Nibley is finally complete. Hong and Hong republished "The Essential Kierkegaard" once they had finished publishing the complete "Kierkegaard's Writings." Doing so would help have an easily accessible authoritative "cannon" of Dr. Nibley's writings.
A delightful book!

This is a very enjoyable read. It is packed with short, witty insight on a variety of topics from a Mormon view. I wish on occasion that the editor had quoted a bit more extensively so as to give a better context for Nibley's comments (especially the short ones; there are a few too many one-liners here to make the book truly satisfying), but since Nibley does tend to get rather deep and not a little intimidating on first acquaintance, I highly recommend this collection as an introduction to the thought of a gifted scholar who refuses to take himself at all seriously
