Ode to a Diet Coke; Disability, Choices and Control

One of the best books on disability and personal struggle to come alone in a long time. A must read for people of all ages, and ethnic groups. A brave woman, and great person.

This is an incredible story of an amazing journey....

Born with cerebral palsy, Barbara Linn (Bobbi) found ways to live an independent successful life. Described as a staunch leader by her colleagues, her work as a disability advocate assisted people in maintaining their freedom and dignity. In a turn of events, Bobbi's health declined, she lost her independence and discovered that she was now the person she had been advocating for. Bobbi tells her story with honesty and heart as she takes the reader with her on an enlightening, emotional journey of what it is like being a person with a disability. The sometimes horrifying story is laced with humor, determination, love and the importance of relationship as she endures the ignorance and misjudgments associated with having a disability. Focused on the love and support Bobbi has in her relationships with her "Mommy," family and friends, she gets outs of the nursing home and begins a new life dependent on caretakers and personal assistants. Though the road is still rough, Bobbi somehow manages to regain control of her life. I related to Bobbi's story in so many ways, as a love and support for my mother who has recently become disabled and as a chaplain working in a hospital setting. From reading "Ode to a Diet Coke: Disabilities, Choices and Control," I have rediscovered my compassionate heart. This inspiring story has much to teach us about disabilities, love, relationships and respect. It's a must read for everybody. Nicole M.
