October 2019 Year C: Scriptures and Reflections

Our thoughts in October turn to the relationship between teacher and student. Paul's letters to Timothy remind him of the need to evangelize, to share the Good News with the Gentiles. The word for October 6 is faith and the metaphor is the mustard seed. The Feast of Our Lady of Victory on October 7 celebrates the power of intercessory prayer. The first reading is the story of Jonah, the reluctant prophet whose dire warnings convinced Nineveh to repent. Then we learn about mercy in the story of the Good Samaritan. October 13 is a day to give thanks. Naaman the leper is cleansed in the Jordan and ten lepers are healed. What does gratitude look like to you? The word for October 20 is persistence. The first story is Joshua's victory over Amalek. In the Gospel, the nagging widow receives a just ruling from the corrupt judge. We are told to pray unceasingly. October ends with Paul preparing to die. He thanks God for salvation and encourages Timothy to remain steadfast in the faith. In the Gospel, Jesus reminds us that the humble will be blessed and the haughty brought low. God loves you. Jesus died for you. He is risen
