Human Nature and Octavia Butler's Lilith's Brood: A Tangled Combination

By Michael Pitts

"Mixing Ecocriticism, Gender Studies, Disability Studies, and the theorization of the Anthropocene, Michael Pitts takes on the formidable task of reading in depth Butler's ambiguously utopian trilogy Lilith's Brood, totally suceeding in unravelling its complex construction. A necessary homage to Butler's SF, full of fine critical nuance, from a scholar with a great respect for women's writing."
--Sara Mart n, author of Masculinity in Contemporary Science Fiction by Men: No Plans for the Future (2025) "The paradoxical and beguiling Oankali were central to Octavia E. Butler's thinking about human beings across the second half of her career--if you want to understand why, this book is mandatory reading."
--Gerry Canavan, author of Octavia E. Butler (2016)

This book examines Octavia E. Butler's Lilith's Brood series to focus on the revolutionary ways she influenced science fiction through challenging treatments of issues including ecological devastation; biological sex; gender, race, sex, and sexualities; biology and identity; and utopian and dystopian themes. By balancing careful, thorough analysis of the trilogy with important biocritical and historical information, Pitts contextualizes the series both within Butler's writing career and the socio-historical milieu in which she wrote. Chapters evidence why Lilith's Brood matters to science fiction studies as a radical challenge to the genre and the culture within which it was produced, as well as why it is similarly deserving of careful consideration by scholars, readers, and fans.
