A handmaiden finds herself lost and alone at a remote oasis in the Sahara. She can remember attending the Pharaoh's funeral, but why is she here now? How did she travel, and why is one of the palace cats sitting beside her?

As time passes, the peace of her oasis is disturbed by strange soldiers, from another time and country. She finds she is on the fringes of a conflict that she cannot understand, guided only by an RAF pilot who has come to Egypt from a country far to the north.
