Books for Real Men

Woman write girlie books about feelings and friendships and family relationships and love and gush, right? Men write he-man books about warriors and spies, athletes and jet pilots, right? It's more true than we'd like to admit, although all of us can name important exceptions. This novel is one of the important exceptions. In clear, uncluttered, poetic prose, Mr. Ronan explores the complex -- and too often tip-toe/fearful and homophobic -- affectional relationships between real men, meaning men like you and me, men with wives and children, careers and respectability. Not that women are given short-shrift here -- they are real and sympathetic and mystified by male emotional paralysis. Guys, get off your patriarchal highhorses and give Frank Ronan a read.
