O Lord in the Morning : Meditations on the Word

This book is the result, not of some grand design to write a book, but of consistent, daily seeking the Lord through His Word. For several years now I have followed a system of devotional writing suggested by Wayne Cordeiro (of Hope Church in Hawaii) which he calls SOAP, as an acronym for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. From long before I met Wayne I have been preparing Scripture lists on various themes, for daily Bible reading by the congregation to which I minister. Each entry in this book lists the overall passage, and then the particular section of that passage to which the Lord directed my attention. Some explanation is due for the selection of passages. The particular theme for selecting these daily readings was "Love," and the time period happened to be from February to November, 2010. In my human fallibility, occasionally a passage was repeated, and at one point in Proverbs, I actually backtracked. It is a demonstration of both the Lord's faithfulness and the richness of His Word that the results are as they are. It should be noted that in the Table of Contents, many topics are repeated. That is simply because God repeats Himself! Many themes are threads running throughout the Bible, and they keep coming out in the tapestry as we read. I also owe you an explanation for why I use the translations I do. It's not because I feel the NIV is the most faithful to the original, but simply because I do my devotions using the same bilingual English/Japanese Bible I preach from, and the English in that is the NIV. The Japanese is the Shinkaiyaku, which of course I don't quote directly in this English book, but which I reference frequently, particularly when the translation differs from the NIV. It is my prayer that the insights the Lord has given me will bless all who read this book, and draw them closer to Him.
