Engaging, believable story of one immigrant family.

This is a well-written, realistically paced story with believable characters. The experiences of the young Ukrainian boy, Nykola Ganczer, provide a unique perspective on the hardships and dreams of Canadian immigrants at the turn of the century. The relationship of grandmother and grandson, their separation from the rest of the family, and the daring journey to join the rest of the family in the unknown new land are simple but poignant elements in a story with universal appeal. The details of the story ring true. Apparently the historical facts behind the fiction have been accurately researched. I highly recommend this novel to all children and adults with an interest in the human side of Canadian history.
