Art book of drawings of all New York City bridges leading off of island of Manhattan. Created during first year of COVID pandemic. Pencil, ink. Black and white. Includes original poem, "Math."
In the world of books there are many pleasures, much that is entertaining, but what one hopes for is that rare surprise, a gem that emerges among the multitude of offerings.
Adam Matta’s “Bridges” is such a book.
Conceived and created as, during the Covid crisis, he rode his bicycle through the boroughs of that enigma called New York City, it is a series of sketches of some 22 bridges that lead out of (or into) Manhattan.
The style is the same, yet different. Perspective and intensity of the renderings varies, some even showing how the sketch was torn from its spiral bound art pad.
There is a preface of sorts, a wonderfully cohesive poem titled “Math.” Taken together with all the illustrations of bridges, Matta’s book is a testament to the endless additions and subtractions that make up this thing called “life.”
