This is the story of a black woman (she calls herself "colored" throughout the book) who went to nursing school in the 1930s and served in the Army Nurse Corps in World War II. It does not emphasize the obstacles she faced as much as it does her many successes. If you're looking for a medical story, this really isn't it although her chronicle of her years as a public health nurse during the civil rights era and before AIDS is interesting. It's a quick and easy read and could probably even be appreciated by older children. Edit: She and her husband are in their early 90s and both are still living in Ohio.
