TITLE: This fourth book of the Pentateuch derives its name Numbers from the Septuagint version and was so designated by the census of the people in the wilderness of Sinai, chapters 1 to 4, and again thirty-eight years later in the plains of Moab, Chapter 26. WRITER: "Moses wrote his departures", 32.2. LINKS: This book is not separated from the others. Exodus describes the way out and the fundamental truth of redemption. Leviticus talks about access to God and details the principles of worship. Numbers recounts the crossing of the desert, with lessons for our conduct in this world. In Leviticus there are many priests, in Numbers the Levites and towards the end the people. ANALYSIS: W. G. Scroggie discerns two broad divisions: - The stay in Sinai - 1.1 to 10.10, where the people were organized and prepared for the trip. - The March to the Plains of Moab - 10.11 to 36.13. Upon reaching Kadesh, disbelief brings the journey to a halt. After wandering for years they started up again, but not without complaints. SPIRITUAL INSTRUCTION: Referring to various experiences of the Israelites in the wilderness, Paul writes: "These things happened to them as examples (or types) and are written to admonish us," 1 Corinthians 10.11. We must study the book. Just as Leviticus begins with the phrase "from the tabernacle," Numbers begins with "in the wilderness." "From the tabernacle," where believers worship the Lord on the first day of the week, we go out "into the wilderness" to serve the Lord. As priests, we worship in the sanctuary; As Levites, we work in the world, witnessing for Christ. In essence, Numbers records the many vicissitudes of life in the desert people, which illustrate the abundant trials that believers encounter in the world. It is not primarily a book of conflict with enemies without, as is the book of Joshua, but an account of enemies within, such as backbiting, disbelief, and insubordination in our pilgrimage in the world. God's grace does not fail, and our resources are found in Christ https: //amzn.to/2Xdtq2m
