Nuclear Korea: The Evolution of Technological Independence

While Korea has in debate for a national nuclear policy, nuclear power plants are being constructed or prepared in Saudi Arabia, the United States, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Poland, Egypt, Turkey, and Africa. As Russia and China begin to dominate the global nuclear market, the Western is losing its leadership role. Although the construction of two new NPPs is suspended in Korea, Team Korea is in the process of completing four APR1400 nuclear reactors in the UAE. Hee Yong Lee, the author of Nuclear Korea, is co-CEO of JEIL Partners, energy consulting company. Mr.Lee has a wealth of experience gained through his position as top manager of Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) nuclear power plant export. He also previously led Team Korea, which participated in the international bidding for the UAE nuclear power plant project in 2009. Nuclear Korea provides a brief history of the evolution of the nuclear power industry in Korea through to it earning the design certification from the US nuclear regulatory agency. The book also cites the full text of Gulf News article, which described in detail the significance of KEPCO being awarded the nuclear project in 2009. The author's intention is to illustrate the gap between the beginning of the nuclear industry in Korea through to its ability to export its nuclear technology. The book will serve as a reminder to the young nuclear generation that they must keep in mind the history of the industry and the commitment to building superior technology by applying a deliberate and step-by-step approach. Building a nuclear power plant is a complicated process, and it is imperative to be well-prepared. The author hopes to convey to his readers the Korean passion and enthusiasm, the trials and the errors, and the difficulties and challenges involved in the evolution of nuclear technology in Korea. The main topic of the book is the localization and technological independence of Korea by means of technology transfer and development. Korea's nuclear infrastructure is very well established. It has evolved to become very specialized and collaborative, from design to manufacturing, construction, operation, and maintenance. In particular, Korea's process for training its technical manpower can be said to be the foundation for building its nuclear power industry. The author would like to share his experience with the entire process from the very beginning of the industry to preparing for overseas and in-house training. With Nuclear Korea, I hope that I am able to convey the best practices for the introduction of nuclear power plants to those countries and individuals that are considering it.
