Nothing You Can't Fix has more than its fair share of love and romance and tragedy. The novel is set in and around a northern university originally founded in the 1960s, but by the latter 1980s and early 1990s it has become an institution clearly in need of radical shake up. There are plenty of ideas about how to do this emanating from a new Vice Chancellor and a young Registrar, but they are not merely obstructed at every turn, but their personal lives come close to being wrecked. The Business School is the only part of the university which could be said to be successful. Its leading Professor, Eddie Miles, not only leads the way in obstructing the reformers, he also takes the opportunity to ensure that the Vice Chancellor's attempts to introduce himself into the local community results in him experiencing sexual humiliation of an order he could not have imagined. Besides his actual work, Miles has a rampant sex life, the scale of which is only matched by his fellow Professor and brother, Jed, and Eddie also finds the time to engage in publishing soft porn written by women he recruits and exploits. The attempts of a much younger female academic colleague to seduce all four of the Business School's senior Professors, even the happily married ones, can be hardly said to be met with failure, but the competition from other women both of the present and from the past is challenging. The death of his wife makes Jed Miles even more available than he was before, but will he make the right choice of successor? Does the one who most appeals to him really want Jed, or does she want to use him to get to one of his closest friends, who was once her lover, and still the love of her life?
