Almost but not completely obscured in the Biblical text are passages that affirm the existence of a doctrine that God rules Israel and that therefore no mortal may do so. This doctrine - theomonarchism - runs counter to the fervent monarchism that prevailed when the Biblical text was finally set. Nevertheless, traces of its existence did survive there, though little attention is usually paid to them.
