Notes for Understanding Our Century

Born in Paris in 1893, Pierre Drieu La Rochelle began his career as a poet, a representative of the generation of young Frenchmen who served in the frontline line during the 1914-18 war. He later established himself as a respected French novelist, essayist and critic in the two decades between the World Wars. Preoccupied by France's falling birth rate and cultural and social decadence, in Notes for Understanding Our Century he presents his understanding of their essential cause, European man's physical decline and the estrangement of his mind from his body. His broad survey of French and European history and culture concludes with a visionary description of what he saw as the fullest revolt against this decline, the totalitarian revolutions in Germany, Italy and the Soviet Union. Completed in 1940 just as the defeat of France's armies by Germany had become clear, Notes for Understanding Our Century is work of cultural and literary criticism by one of Europe's most self-aware and introspective fascist intellectuals. Available for the first time in English it remains important for understanding the motivation behind Drieu's own commitment to collaboration with National Socialist Germany and the course of events that led to his suicide in 1945. Includes an introduction to Drieu's life and political views.
