Start with state notary law. Then proceed.

The foundation for any notary training should be the knowledge of one's notary laws. In Colorado, for example, the Secretary of State website is a good place to start if one wants to become a notary. There they can find the Notary Handbook, notary law (Colorado Revised Statutes), notary classes that are available, and more. In short, all of the information that one needs to become a notary public. It's beyond the scope of this book to include all of this. It accurately points this out in Chapter 7 by stating that the notary must be familiar with his or her state's certificate requirements and follow them exactly. State notary law has to be the starting point for any notary. So I wouldn't rely solely on this book to learn how to become a notary, or as a course to pass a state notary exam. The title is misleading in that respect. This book is best used as a reference work. There are notary procedures that it describes in detail, such as loose certificates, power of attorney, and copy certification, that you probably won't find in your notary handbook. However, not all states permit notaries to certify copies. So once again, knowledge of state notary law is essential. There are a couple of sections, Chapters 16 and 17, that the notary signing agent may find helpful -- 'Troublesome Documents' and 'Accomodating the Recorder'. There is the recurring caveat throughout the book, "State Laws Vary". If you are aspiring to become a notary, it's best to start with the notary laws for your state. Then perhaps use this book as a reference. A better, and more affordable option, would be to purchase a notary law primer for your state, if one is available.

Notary home study

I doubt anyone is buying this book for its eloquent prose. It reads like a DMV handbook but it contains everything it should. It is easy to follow and fulfills its objective. If you want to become a notary, this book can help get you there.
