Jane's in a rut.
She's living with her dad, taking the bus to a dead-end job she might lose soon anyway. Her woodworking hobby could become something more, maybe even a career. But a messy schedule, tight budget, and reluctance to work alone in the shed at night make it hard for her to commit. So she takes a chance.
She buys an android to help her out. It's secondhand and scuffed up something fierce, but the price for an allegedly working android is hard to beat. Even if it is a companion model, or, as most people would say, a sexbot. Jane isn't looking for that kind of service, though. Just an extra pair of hands.
And sure, the robot's a little too eager, a little too broken, and maybe a little too weird... but it turns out she's not entirely wrong about what it can do.
