A Little Gem!

Most wine books are made for the coffee table. This one is made for keeping in your bag or in the car, and will see much more use than large hardback wine guides. In that sense it's not an armchair guide, but a take-with-you companion. For each of the Northwest's main regions it has a short, very up to date description of what's in and where are the best places to tour. Then the book gets personal: it has comprehensive template tasting notes for you to fill in. You become a collaborator in the book! Despite its bijoux size, the many photographs are sumptuous. The book deserves to be reissued every couple of years, changing and growing to keep pace with where's hot and where's not. (Idaho, for example, is mentioned but on size does not yet merit its own section). One particular feature of the book is that it is not at all aimed at the wine snob. The writing is witty and unpretentious. The only thing it possibly lacks is a touring map of each region - perhaps something for next editions. The table of "Northwest Wine Descriptors" (describing typical taste descriptions for each well known grape) alone is worth the cover price for me. Overall, a little gem that deserves to be updated and republished every few years.
