Northumberland Aviation Stories

The northernmost county in England, Northumberland has lots of aviation-related stories to tell, from almost the very dawn of flying in the United Kingdom until the present day. Here are some of them. Chapters include anti-submarine patrols off the coastline during the First World War, mishaps at Cramlington Aerodrome, the Heinkel bomber that crashed just outside Morpeth and the Hunter pilot who ejected over the town, landing in the King Edward VI School grounds. Other tales include an American-crewed Beaufighter that crashed just after leaving Acklington to fly to Cornwall, and the sad tale of an aircraft bound for the scrapyard which hit a mountain on what would possibly have been its final flight in any case.
