Genny Fitch's Chocolate Souffle from The Fearrington House Restaurant. Crippen's Horseradish-Crusted Salmon. Chilled Asparagus Soup with Maine Steamed Crab from Gabrielle's at Richmond Hill. North Carolina's historic restaurants offer opportunities to experience a variety of culinary delights. Author Dawn O'Brien explored restaurants across the state, from The Cottage, a 1916 bungalow at Carolina Beach, to the Fryemont Inn, a bark-sided inn built in Bryson City in 1923. In their dining rooms and kitchens she learned about each place, its history and food. She talked with chefs, owners, and managers persuading them to divulge the recipes that made their restaurants famous. In 1983, she gathered this information into one book. Over twenty years later, O'Brien returns with a fourth edition of this classic travel guide/cookbook. In this book you will find information about fifty restaurants housed in historic buildings. A brief historical sketch appears along with recipes from each establishment and information about hours of operation, location, phone number, and website. In cuisine, there is everything from the family-style dining at Shatley Springs Inn to the elegant presentations at the McNinch House in Charlotte. Settings range from the Lifesaving Station Restaurant at Sanderling to the 1879 Victorian mansion that houses Second Empire Restaurant in Raleigh. More than 130 recipes are presented here, with clear, step-by-step instructions. The author carefully tested and edited every recipe to ensure consistently good results. Now you can reproduce these dishes in your own kitchen. Book jacket.
Lots of good NC Restaurants are here. Book is a little dated, but still has great recipes. Just wish it was spiral binded. The crabcake recipe is wonderful. A must for the southern cook!
Great housewarming gift for newcomers!

I have given this book to lots of friends. There is a pen-and-ink drawing and a brief history of each restaurant featured in the book. Each restaurant has submitted several recipes. Most of the restaurants featured are the top restaurants in the state. The author has also written other books for states throughout the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic. If you are a realtor, this would make a perfect housewarming gift for your clients who are new to the area!
