Sullivan County was formed in 1779 from Washington County, Tennessee which in turn was formed from western part of Washington District North Carolina. This book contains abstracts of 964 various warrants, surveys and grants issued by North Carolina for land in Washington County, Tennessee. There are also a few letters which were also found among the grant files and petitions to the Assembly. It was customary for the surveyor to describe the location of the property on some stream or head waters of some stream, or on some mountain giving great detail as to its boundaries and names of neighbors. Other data to be gleaned from these abstracts: name of grant receipent, name of person selling grant, acerage, warrant numbers and dates of issue along with other usefule information. There are 4 grants issued by Virginia in the 1750's for land that is now in Sullivan County.
