Book Overview

The only reprint of this important Caribbean novel originally released in 1969, Nor Any Country explores the complexities of people in the Diasporas returning to their homeland and the intricacies of moral choice in a society in the process of change. Peter Breville has been away from his native St. Lucia for the past eight years. After completing his doctorate in England, he is appointed to a university post in Jamaica. Though he dreads the meeting, he decides he must see his family on the way. There is his mother, for whom he feels real affection; his father, with whom he has never got on, and his brother, with whom competition had turned to antagonism. And there is Phyllis, from whom his education and travel have taken him ever further away, who has waited patiently for his return, determined to be a wife to him. In the week he spends with his family and meeting old friends, he discovers a St. Lucia that, in the early 1960s, is on the point of emerging into the modern capitalist world, but where the disparity between the new middle class and the impoverished Black Creole majority has become ever wider.
