None to Comfort Me, a comfortable look at uncomfortable situations.

Ms Davis writes a touching and believable story of a young girl's transitions, transitions between different continents, different life styles, and different ages of maturity. The young heroine finds herself suddenly facing a life in the semi-rural South of an America few truly remember first hand. She has arrived from, almost literally, a different world - Pre-Communist China and must adapt quickly to this very different lifestyle. It reminds us that we all must face change in our lives. From formal manners learned abroad to a neighbor sitting with a shotgun, daring the power company to cut into his trees to run a new line, homespun-style anecdotes dot this endearing story, reminding us that we all have relations that we'd rather ignore than admit to. There is also true love in this story, the love of a daughter for her father and equally from the father to the daughter. They are kindred spirits who make each other whole. We can only hope that we would do as well with our own offspring. I read this book many years ago, and some of the themes still haunt me today. If I had never lived in the part of the South that Ms Davis writes about (which I have) it would still be a part of me through the vividness of her writing. Thank you Ms. Davis for bringing a part of yourself, for truly this must be based on parts of your own experiences to be so vivid, to a world far to engrossed in things that only matter on a grander-world-scale. Better we look at the world through the eyes of the young, and wish for the return of the simpler life, that is never quite as simple as we remember it.
