Nonduality in Plain English

Some things are worth checking for yourself. This is one of them.

If you have spent any time near meditation, philosophy, or the contemplative end of almost any religion, you have probably run into the word nonduality. You may also have noticed how rarely anyone explains it. The books tend to arrive in Sanskrit, or in a voice so certain that it becomes difficult to ask a question, or with a teacher attached.

This one is written differently, and it begins from an ordinary observation. Most of us carry a quiet assumption we have never once examined: that there is someone in here, behind the eyes, receiving a world out there. It is such a natural way to feel that inspecting it rarely occurs to anyone. But people have inspected it, carefully, in every century and on every continent, inside religious traditions and entirely outside them. What they report back is remarkably consistent, and remarkably easy to test.

You do not have to take their word for any of it. That is the whole point of the book.

An invitation rather than a program

Nothing here asks you to believe anything, join anything, or become a certain kind of person. You do not have to be calm, patient, or good at meditating. You do not have to take up a religion or set one down. Believers and skeptics can run every experiment in these pages and get the same results, because the questions are about the structure of experience rather than the nature of the universe.

Ten minutes a day is the recommended sitting. The book will also tell you, honestly, that a four second version done often matters more than the sitting does.

Twenty-two short chapters across five parts: what this is, what it is not, how to look, the two ways the whole thing reliably goes wrong, and what living with it actually looks like on a Thursday afternoon. Along the way there is a candid accounting of the limits, including a full chapter on feelings, trauma, medication, and the moments when the right move is to close the book and call someone.

At the back you will find twelve traditions described in plain language, from Advaita and Zen to Kabbalah, Sufism, Stoicism, and modern phenomenology, so you can see how many different rooms this same discovery has been made in. There is also a practice card with the whole instruction and no commentary at all.

What it might actually be worth

Not a transformation you could announce, and nothing that would look like much from outside. The dishes still need doing. The difficult person at work is still difficult. What tends to change is smaller and steadier than that: a little more room around the day, a little less effort spent maintaining someone who was never quite there, and an easier time being with the people in front of you.

The book proposes one honest test for whether any of it worked. Ask somebody who lives with you whether you are easier to be around than you were two years ago.
