Non Verbal Communication in Conference Interpretation: A Case Study of Hearing Impaired Persons

This study explores the role of non-verbal communication (NVC) in conference interpreting for people with hearing impairments in Rivers State (Nigeria). Faced with linguistic and cultural barriers, the interpreter does not merely convey verbal content: they utilise gestures, facial expressions, posture and proxemics to bridge semantic gaps and enhance accessibility. Using a mixed-methods approach (observations at conferences, interviews with sign language interpreters and deaf participants), the study reveals that NVC partially compensates for hearing loss, but that its effectiveness depends on the training of interpreters and institutional recognition of these practices. It also highlights the challenges associated with dialectal variations in the local sign language and the lack of standardisation. In conclusion, the explicit integration of CNV into training and interpreting protocols would improve inclusion and the quality of participation for people with hearing impairments in public spaces in Rivers State.
