NOBODY'S IN CHARGE: A Will Hatcher Novel
A New Mexican town is running out of water. The hospital is hours from crisis. The mine cannot shut down. Everyone has a reasonable claim. Every answer costs somebody.
The rain came. It didn't help.
A New Mexico storm over a fresh burn scar turns San Juan del R o's reservoir to ash and mud. The drought-stricken town has just days of water. The copper mine that could spare the most water is protected by a defense contract no one will explain. The ranchers are losing cattle. The hospital needs water pressure. But no one controls the water whole system.
The mayor answers to residents standing in line for drinking water. A hospital prepares to evacuate patients. A copper mine employs hundreds while drawing from the same declining aquifer as local ranches. Washington insists the mine must continue producing material for a military commitment it cannot fully disclose.
As Hatcher weighs hospitals against livelihoods, national security against local survival, rancher Tom Baca watches his cattle die. His teenage daughter, Isabel, fights to save the breeding cow she raised while trying to imagine a future beyond the family ranch. Journalist Marina Fuentes follows the consequences of every official promise, including her own.
Then four activists enter a remote pumping station with explosives, relying on a water map that is already out of date.
Set along the borderlands of New Mexico and Chihuahua, Mexico, Nobody's in Charge is a deliberately paced novel of drought, divided authority, consequences, and the hidden knowledge that keeps communities alive.
