After a routine smear test Nicky is shocked to discover she's morbidly obese, careering towards her 50th birthday she decides to get healthy. The story follows weight loss her project which changes more than just her size, her life becomes illuminated as secrets are revealed and old acquaintances re-appear
The people she meets, friendships she embraces open her up to a world she'd unconsciously trudged through for years. Nicky is a strong, vivacious woman, far from a victim, life and work have just blinkered her for too long, but her time is now.
We see several examples of her husband's vicious tongue and hints at her declining marriage which has deteriorated over the last two years, she perseveres with the relationship but challenges Joe's cruel words constantly with little affect.
We follow the ups and downs of daily family life, throughout Nicky soldiers on dealing with every crisis with valour, Joe's cruel words when their daughter has an accident, her son's trouble with the police and poor grades which is how she meets her previous love from university again, Oliver Lucas.
