A favorite

I read this book early in my exploration of Sufi poetry -- and I was hooked! Abu Said Abil-Kheir's poetry ranges from the ecstatic and celestial, to struggles with abandonment. His poetry has an immediacy and even a sort of devoutly wry petulance. This book remains a personal favorite of mine.

Breath of fresh air to the soul

Like Rumi, Abu Saeed has the innate ability to leave the reader in an elevated state. Beautiful renditions of the original, these poems WILL touch you and leave you drunk on God! Thank you Mr. Abramian!

priceless treasure-soothing, inspiring, uplifting, transformational & terrific quick read

When I saw only 1 review for this priceless book a friend gave me, I wanted to add another as this is one of my most favourite books ever. Not only is the poetry as profound and powerful as that of great Masters like Rumi, Hafiz, Kabir, Mira Bai etc., but what I love about this book is the pieces are so short and varied that it makes it easy to pick up and get a quick dose of inspiration and uplift at any time. Thus, in addition to being a powerful book in itself, I find it the perfect book to have by my bedside for a quick boost in those times when I'm too busy to read anything. Although the same applies to Rumi etc., somehow these pieces are even shorter and more complete within a few lines. The power of the brevity and range of pieces on a given page somehow give me a complete re-orientation more rapidly here than with any of the many other poetry books I've come across so far. I hope you come to enjoy it as much as I do as initially I was a little disappointed by the brevity due to my friend having told me it was as great as Hafiz' "I heard God laughing". But once I stopped looking for more of that type of writing, I grew to love this book's specific style and content as much in its own special way.

Deals with the longing for union with God

A Sufi mystic of the 10th century, Shaikh Abu-Saeed Abil-Kheir was an impressive poet who dealt with the longing for union with God, the desire to distinguish of the real from the false, the inexpressible beauty of creation when seen through the eyes of love, and the many attitudes of heart, mind and feeling in search of the Beloved. Vraje Abramian (adjunct professor at Northeastern University and the Franklin Institute, Boston) has translated this Sufi mystic's timeless poetry for a new generation of readers. #193: Raindrops might be counted,/but not my trespasses./Sinking in the ocean of remorse,/in the depths of desperation,/I tread this valley of sorrows,/hanging my head low./All seems lost./Then I hear the Friend, my Beloved,/Ocean of Mercy and Grace./"All is as it should be Darvish,"/you do what can be expected of you,/We will do what We are capable of."
