"Nobody Knows, Nobody Sees" is an extremely well-written novel and a great read. The characters are well-drawn, multi-dimensional people you come to like, even the bad guys. He treats the low income and working poor who make up most of the characters in his story with respect such people seldom receive in literature. Most of my personal experiences in Appalachia have been in Eastern Tennessee rather than Eastern Kentucky, but among the same working class and working poor family and friends who people Bob Sloan's stories. No one captures these people better than Bob Sloan. You learn much about modern Appalachia by reading Bob Sloan, but most of all, he is a darn good story-teller. Reading his work is like sitting on the front porch of an old farm house back in the hollow with a little woodsmoke settling and a bit of whiskey sitting between you and him. "Nobody Knows, Nobody Sees" is a first-rate mystery novel with very surprising twists (at least to me) that snuck up and grabbed me at the end. I would recommend you also read his short stories. He is one of our best writers today.
