The story of the winners of the world's most prestigious prize. The Nobel Prize is widely regarded as the most prestigious award one can receive. The Prize is administered by the Nobel Foundation, and... This description may be from another edition of this product.
Starting with a comprehensive chapter about Alfred Nobel (his life and great achievements). Then the history of 'The Prize' and it's attribues (institutions / academy). $1,000,000 = clearly none of the nobel winners dare cared about that. But that $ freed each to pursue their passion without external $ influence. After reading the various selected profiles of nobel laureates you appreciate their individual zeal and drive. Beautifully concise presentations of the investigators and their theories, ideas, and discoveries: Koch = tuberculosis T.S. Eliot = poetry Carrel = transplantation Marquez = literary magic Gide = the human condition Cassin = the rights of man Mandela - Walesa, Carter - King, Gorbachev - Gore. The list of whos who above all whos who lists. And of course the queen and king = Mother Teresa and Einstein. Apartheid, finance, carbon 14, semiconductors, DNA, green earth. The list of nobel worthy information goes on and on. A fantastic gift book for that hard to buy 'intellectual' friend.
A Prize for All

An excellent review of the Nobel prizes and the winners. Many of the winners you will recognize, but many are unfamiliar to most of us. Detailed information is provided for a handful of the winners from each decade, but there is also a complete listing of all the winners. A great reference book, and I also found it an interesting book to just browse.
