Collected Studies on Chinese and Foreign Cinema and Theatre/中外电影戏剧研究论集 [Chinese]

By: 郑雪来

This volume brings together over twenty essays arranged in three sections: Film Theory and Aesthetics, Foreign Cinema, and Studies on the Stanislavski System. The collection reflects the author's more than fifty years of engagement with the translation, introduction, and critical examination of foreign film theories and the Stanislavski approach to stage performance and direction. In the wake of the reform and opening-up, when an influx of Western cinematic ideas and theoretical frameworks gave rise to confusion and heated dispute within the Chinese film industry over such fundamental questions as aesthetic principles, conceptual paradigms, disciplinary definitions, and methodological approaches, the author wrote extensively to advance reasoned positions. Guided by the principle of critically assimilating foreign ideas while separating truth from falsehood, these writings helped to dispel certain misconceptions and restore conceptual clarity. As film, theatre, and other artistic genres evolve in tandem with historical change, their expressive content and formal vocabularies are subject to continual enrichment and transformation, and their theoretical underpinnings are correspondingly revised. It is the author's earnest hope that this collection may serve as a modest catalyst for further scholarly inquiry and intellectual exchange in the fields of film and theatre studies.
