Random Talks on the Water Margin/水浒丛话 [Chinese]

By: 林岗

Read history, observe the world - a professor from the Department of Chinese at Sun Yat-sen University takes you on a journey to explore the humanistic history and social realities behind Water Margin. As one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature, Water Margin profoundly reflects the broad social life of the Song Dynasty. Its plot is intricate, complex, and highly dramatic, and it successfully portrays a host of vivid and well-known characters beloved by readers, such as Song Jiang, Lin Chong, Shi Jin, Li Kui, Lu Zhishen, and Wu Song. Random Talks on the Water Margin offers unique critical commentary on the various aspects of Song Dynasty traditional society, life, culture, and customs as revealed through the many characters and stories in Water Margin. At the same time, drawing on contemporary political, economic, and cultural references, it deconstructs the myriad human experiences, matters of good and evil, and right and wrong in traditional society-evoking the sentiments of the ancients while articulating the paradoxes of modern people. The central purpose of this book is to use a leisurely, accessible writing style to examine and critique the human relationships, social conditions, and the nature of good and evil expressed in classical Chinese literature, subjecting them to modern critical scrutiny.
