Chang'e swallowed the elixir and flew up to the moon, the closest celestial body to the mortal world, where she became an immortal. When Hou Yi returned home and heard what had happened, he went to look for Peng Meng, but Peng Meng had already fled. Hou Yi gazed at the night sky and called out Chang'e's name. He was astonished to find that the moon was exceptionally bright, and within it, a flickering figure that greatly resembled Chang'e. Hou Yi tried with all his might to chase after the moon, but no matter how hard he tried, he could not reach it. Hou Yi then set up an incense altar in the garden that Chang'e had loved, placing there the pastries and fruits she had enjoyed most in life, and offered sacrifices to Chang'e far away on the moon from a distance. The common people also set up incense altars beneath the moon, praying to the kindhearted Chang'e for good fortune and peace.
