Wu Zetian, also known as Wu Meiniang or Wu Hao, was born in the seventh year of Emperor Gaozu of Tang Dynasty's Wude era (624 AD) and passed away in the first year of the Shenlong era (705 AD). She was the first female emperor of a legitimate dynasty in China, the oldest emperor to ascend the throne at the age of 67, and one of the longest lived emperors at the age of 82. During the reign of Emperor Gaozong of Tang (655-683), she served as Empress Dowager, while during the reigns of Emperor Zhongzong and Emperor Ruizong of Tang (683-690), she declared herself Emperor of Wu Zhou (690-705), changed the country's name from ""Tang"" to ""Zhou"", and honored the title of ""Holy Emperor"". She established her capital in Luoyang and named it ""Shendu"", which is historically known as ""Wu Zhou"" or ""Southern Zhou"". In 705, he abdicated and was posthumously honored as the ""Great Sage Emperor Zetian"" by Emperor Zhongzong of Tang.
