No Vacancy: Homeless Women in Paradise

By Michael E. Reid

Book Overview

NO VACANCY, HOMELESS WOMEN IN PARADISE by Michael E. Reid highlights the struggles of 500 homeless women in affluent coastal areas of California, such as Monterey and Carmel, revealing the stark contrast between wealth and homelessness. Reid, an Episcopalian priest, co-founded the Fund for Homeless Women in response to this crisis, which he now manages full-time. The narrative delves into the complexities of homelessness, illustrating how well-intentioned policies can sometimes worsen the divide between the homeless and society. By sharing the personal stories of these women, Reid sheds light on issues of marginalization, belonging, and gender-based discrimination, particularly affecting women and people of color. NO VACANCY emphasizes the growing reality of homelessness in unexpected places across the U.S. and aims to inspire readers to engage in grassroots social change amidst declining political and financial support for communities.
