In the early twentieth century, Chiara Lubich founded the Focolare movement, now numbering more than 2 million members around the world. One of the hallmarks of the movement is the spirituality of unity, which editor Julian Ciabattini calls "the charism sent through Chiara to the Church and to all humankind." In 2001 Pope John Paul II praised Lubich as "a messenger of unity and mercy among many brothers and sisters in every corner of the world."
