No Quick Fix: Rethinking Literacy Programs in America's Elementary Schools

(Part of the Language and Literacy Series)

This classic text introduced the framework for the current Response to Intervention (RTI) initiative. Now that federal education policy has caught up with the research and reform models first presented here over a decade ago, this special edition of No Quick Fix is of critical importance to today's teachers, principals, administrators, policymakers, and everyone interested in creating schools where all students learn to read. Outlining the key factors essential for effective reform of early literacy programs, this groundbreaking resource presents:

A framework for the comprehensive redesign of early reading instruction and early intervention services.Proven national models of early intervention, including Reading Recovery, along with their impacts on reducing referrals for special education services.A unified intervention delivery model that calls for an end to fragmented special services.A more cost-effective means of intervention that meets the needs of instructionally needy children.

The Truth Be Told

Allington is wise and thoughtful. There are so many programs being used to support the RTI model that are turning our children into little fluency machines... plotting their literacy on graphs that mean little or nothing to their literacy lives. As educators, we should all read this book and Allington's other resources that bring the focus back to children, rather than programs. Read this book, you won't be disappointed!

A master researcher presents a master plan for reading intervention

Dr. Allington has bravely fought on the frontline of the "reading wars" for many years. He has always championed the sane, research-based, child- and teacher- friendly approach to teaching reading. His very vocal critics, who were quite vicious at times, have been proven wrong by the complete and utter failure of their approaches through the corrupted Reading First program and the disaster of No Child Left Behind. This book, first written 10 years ago, was a clarion call for sane, sensible approaches to teaching reading to all children. The basis of what is now the mandatory RTI (required under NCLB -- how ironic) is laid out is full research summaries of what actually works in this volume, withthorough explanations of approaches that actually help struggling readers. Highly recommended for the serious, experienced professional who values research-based, proven strategies that aren't manipulated into a political agenda and who wish to avoid the latest fads and empty promises of quick fixes.
