No Proper Words

No Proper Words is a debut literary fiction novel with a plot set in the present-day Intelligence Community of Washington, DC. When people think of a spy novel, they might think about Jason Bourne, the CIA, guns, and car chases. The real ethos of Intelligence work is more about people-about characters. How a person moves through the world; how desires and fear create patterns-both personal and interpersonal. And so, while the plot of No Proper Words boasts a theme of espionage, it also explores the quiet, emotional curiosity, intensity, and intimacy between a professional mentor and a mentee.

The story follows the main character Monica Sayre through a chaotic professional transition. At the beginning of the novel, Monica is a young statistician for the National Security community working for a company in Washington, DC. She meets a woman through happenstance and receives a very cryptic job offer that she accepts. The job takes her overseas working for a company called SOLVENCY. The story takes an abrupt turn when there is an unexpected death of a man affiliated with SOLVENCY's work and Monica becomes increasingly concerned that she may have inadvertently had something to do with it. The novel focuses on Monica's struggle to unravel the truths around SOLVENCY's work in the context of her personal situation.
