Natchitoches landowner Pierre Metoyer convinces his slave Marie Thérèze, called “Coincoin,” that they can live in a special world of their own, where the color of their skin does not matter. No Other... This description may be from another edition of this product.
In No Other World much of the page-turning action springs from the land itself: warring bees, a river that changes course, a tornado that strands chickens in odd places. And each natural disaster comes to represent the power struggles in the confusing racial mixture that was antebellum Louisiana. And where would a great historical novel be without depicting the survival of love in the most adverse circumstances? I highly recommend this touching novel. From Mandingo to Driving Miss Daisy, movies about the Black experience have taken us from African Roots to the Middle Passage to the plantation. The time is now ripe for a movie about a female ex-slave slaveholder. I hope some director has the courage to look this bizarre part of African American history right in the eye.
One Strong Woman

"No Other World" is a fascinating account of the life of a young woman, Coincoin, who started life as a slave in Louisiana. Coincoin had no power, no rights and yet she had the inner resources to become the owner of a succesful business. More importantly, she changed the future forever for her ten children and all of their children to follow. This book gave me a look at a time-gone-by when the world was completely different than it is now. It is very clear that we all owe thanks to people like Coincoin for changing our society. Like her, we all must keep using our own inner strength and resources to create positive changes.
