Among the novels I've read that deal with protagonists battling their own demons, Mary Dempsey's "No Ordinary Love" stands out. From the opening lines to its wrenching conclusion, this startling novel has the ring of truth. "Reality check," author Dempsey says on the first page. Amen to that. Readers will find themselves dealing with Dempsey's insistence that they confront the naked truths of her characters' human frailties, especially her heroine, Keara Fitzgerald, who battles substance addiction, a gripping extramarital affair and the demands of family, while trying to hold her fraying life together. Dempsey's is a compelling tale of a woman who is truly torn between two men, while trying to steer clear of her addictions, the safe harbors of her past. Meanwhile, she is trying to serve as some kind of role model for her teenage daughter. The novel defines the term page-turner. If this first novel is an example of what is to come from this gifted author, I anxiously await her next book.
