While standing in line to purchase fresh-baked bread at a local bakery in Alpine, Texas, three women form an unlikely friendship. Katherine Bell, Doris Kemp, and Susanna Perez have little in common... This description may be from another edition of this product.
No Odes to Widows is an excellent read. The characters are well drawn and interesting. The murder mystery aspect is intriguing. The descriptions of West Texas life and scenery bring you there. One can hear the drawl in the authentic West Texas language. Best of all, the portrayal of the widows, their pain and struggle is sensitive and genuine. This book is unique in its look at widowhood and sorrow. Anyone who has experienced a loss, whether spouse or otherwise can relate to the three women. Their every day feelings coupled with their sometimes heroic, sometimes mundane efforts to go on with their lives meant a lot to me. Also, I enjoyed the humor. It is a book with depth and fun - and a murder mystery to boot!
good read plus empowers introspection

Fast-moving story; plot skillfully driven by dialog. Women with initially no bond but common widowhood join to solve murder which created yet another widow. As a widow, I found this a very comforting story; the author understands that the process of embracing loss is very much slower and much more varied from widow to widow than is popularly imagined. All this plus an imaginative plot at a sprightly pace.
