The story is set in the early 20th century and follows the life of a young woman named Barbara, who is torn between her desire for independence and her loyalty to her family's traditions. Barbara's family is deeply religious and holds strict beliefs about the use of graven images, which are seen as idolatrous. As she struggles to reconcile her passion for art with her family's beliefs, Barbara meets a young man named Jack who shares her love for creativity. They begin a relationship, but their love is tested when Jack's father, a prominent member of the community, opposes their union due to Barbara's family's religious beliefs.
