On discovering who Martin is, Andy feels a kinship with Martin as only neighbours from where the both come from do. The feeling, however does not appear to be reciprocated. Andy writes and recieves letters from home frequently, but Martin has lost all contact with his family, something Andy is determined to remedy, and he is baffled as to why his attempts are rebuffed.
