Jack Keller, severely wounded during the Tet Offensive of January 1968 struggles to reclaim his life and marriage as he goes from a lost military career to English professor, to becoming an Episcopal priest. Ho Bac Kien leaves Vietnam in 1975 to avoid the anger of the North Vietnamese victors. He becomes a "boat person" traveling on dangerous high seas with two of his children. He ends up a refugee sponsored by an Episcopal Church in the Southwest. Sarah Windsor, an overzealous parishioner, wants to convert the Vietnamese family but is talked into providing support. A retired Air Force Brigadier General meets with a self-proclaimed Major General who leads him into believing that the Vietnamese are secretly bringing Communism to the country. Moreover, an Army friend of Jack Keller's gets revenge for Ho Bac Kien. This story ends in tragedy, but Keller sees hope in that he has made the right decisions.
