No expectations: No disappointment

When people think about defining this book, the phrases "no expectations," "no disappointments," and "romantic ties" often spring to mind. At some point in our life, a significant other of ours has disappointed each and every one of us by betraying our trust. Some of us have been disappointed so often that we no longer have the expectation that the connections we have would be beneficial and rewarding. This is because we have been let down so frequently. Nevertheless, addressing romantic relationships in this way is not the most effective tactic.

It is not the same thing as reducing our standards or settling for a life that is less than what we deserve to have just because we do not have any expectations and are thus not disappointed by life. It does not mean that we are required to forego our hopes of having a satisfying career and a loving, healthy relationship in order to accommodate this reality.
