This English edition of Jūhachidō Nenju Shidai (The Eighteen Paths Recitation Sequence) follows the Nishino-in-ryū transmission, which preserves the ritual framework said to have been composed by Kōbō Daishi (Kūkai) himself.
It is the first stage of the Shidokegyō, the Fourfold Preliminary Practices of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism, and serves as the foundational training in the path of mantra, mudrā, and visualization.

One should always receive instruction and empowerment from a qualified Shingon master (Ajari) before attempting these rituals. Without such guidance, correct understanding and realization of the practices will be extremely difficult.

All Siddham letters and mantras are presented in Romanized Japanese pronunciation, preserving the traditional phonetic form used in Japan rather than the Sanskrit or English equivalents.

In addition to serving as a manual for actual practice, this book may also provide valuable insight for those who wish to understand what forms of ritual and meditative training are performed in Japanese Esoteric Buddhism.
